2011 Winter Reading Camp
2011-12-23
Twenty outstanding students from underprivileged families in Kaili City of Guizhou Province came to Shanghai and attended SSCLF’s Winter Reading Camp, Dec. 20-23, 2011.
The Children’s Reading Camps, held during the schools’ summer and winter vacations, are a part of SSCLF’s “Charitable Bookstacks “ program, with specific help from the Children’s Epoch magazine and the China Welfare Institute Publishing House. Its aim is to encourage children’s interest in reading, provide them with better hopes for the future, and promote interchange between children of urban and rural areas. During this year’s winter reading camp, the children from Guizhou, together with children from other places, enjoyed reading sessions under the guidance of well-known children’s authors, attended a psychology class, visited the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, the Shanghai Library, and the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling. They also had friendly sessions with the students of the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling School.
Since the launching of the “Soong Ching Ling Charitable Bookstacks” in 2006, SSCLF has donated 600,000 books and periodicals to the students and teachers in the remote mountainous areas of Yunnan, Hunan, Guizhou, Hainan and Anhui provinces, the children of migrant workers in Shanghai, and the children of earthquake stricken areas. It has set up 400 permanent “Soong Ching Ling Charitable Bookstacks” in those areas and has held four Children’s Reading Camps in Shanghai.
