From July 26 to 28, with the support of SSCLF–Shanghai Yongjia People Medical Special Fund, a group of famous doctors from Shanghai went to Hongyuan county in Aba prefecture, Sichuan province to conduct a free clinic for the local Tibetan people.

The free clinic was sponsored by Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation and Shanghai Yongjia Chamber of Commerce, and co-organized by People’s Government of Hongyuan County, Aba Prefecture, Sichuan Province, and People’s Hospital of Hongyuan County. The expert team includes: Hanlin from Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Changhai Hospital; Wang Zhisong from 91150 Navy Hospital; Ye Rensong from Department of Respiratory Medicine, Shanghai Eighth People’s Hospital; Wang Zhen from Department of Ophthalmology, Tongji Hospital; Huang Jiazhang from Department of Orthopaedics, Huashan Hospital; Tao Xiaoming from Department of Endocrinology, Huadong Hospital; Ma Honglong from Department of Gynecology, Changning Maternity and Child Health Hospital; Yan Zijun from Department of Medical Ultrasonics, Ruijin Hospital, etc. They are all well-known doctors from major hospitals in Shanghai.

During the free clinic, 48 herdsmen were given pterygium surgery, and more than 1,000 Hongyuan villagers were provided with medical treatment. Free outpatient registration and free outpatient examination (including blood test, B-ultrasound, CT, gynecological examination, etc.) were conducted, while daily necessities of altogether 25,000 yuan and prescription drugs of all kinds were donated. The total cost added up to more than 400,000 yuan, helping to improve Hongyuan people’s health in an all-round way.

On July 26, after getting off the plane, the Shanghai medical expert team went straight to the hospital. Regardless of the altitude stress brought by the altitude of more than 3,600 meters, they entered the outpatient department as soon as possible to provide medical treatment for the patients waiting there. There were 8 outpatient departments with the title “Famous Doctor’s Studio”. All departments were crowded with people waiting for consultation. Most of them were local Tibetans and herdsmen. Hearing that famous doctors from Shanghai were coming for medical treatment, they registered early according to their own needs. A herdsman said that he spent two hours to the hospital and lined up for registration from 6:00 a.m. Due to the long distance, some Tibetans arrived at the hospital for registration one day ahead of schedule. Two days before free clinic, the number of registered patients was already over 500.

In addition to outpatient service, Shanghai medical experts also performed pterygium surgery there. According to Wang Zhen, associate chief physician of Ophthalmology Department of Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Tongji University, pterygium was a kind of chronic inflammatory disease caused by ultraviolet radiation in the plateau area and wind and sand stimulation. Pterygium could cause blindness, so special surgery was arranged in the free clinic. He Yonghua, president of Hongyuan People’s Hospital, said that due to the limitations of local medical level and equipment, patients had to go to Chengdu and other cities for surgery before. This time, patients with pterygium could receive free “door-to-door” surgery, which made them quite thankful.

To further promote the health care level in Hongyuan County, the Shanghai Yongjia Chamber of Commerce also conducted special lectures to popularize medical knowledge. Tao Xiaoming, associate chief physician of Department Endocrinology of Huadong Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, gave an instruction on “Comprehensive Management of Diabetes”, while Han Lin, chief physician of Department Cardiovascular Surgery, Changhai Hospital Affiliated to The Naval Military Medical University, lectured on “Knowledge of Heart and Cardiac-Related Diseases”, helping local doctors to develop more medical skills.

The 7th large-scale free medical clinic activity, sponsored by SSCLF and Shanghai Yongjia Chamber of Commerce, was successfully completed. The spirit of doctor's benevolence and great love has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people of Hongyuan!
